A professional snowboarder in British
Columbia for eight years, 32-year-old Scott
put himself through university with his
winnings from the slopes. Along the way, he
nurtured his interest in art.
“I took some
classes at Simon Fraser on the creative
process,” he says, “painted a little on my
own, and [did] lots of life drawing.”
“I don’t
think you can teach someone how to paint the
way I desire to,” he adds. “You just
practice a lot and then trust your feelings
and take the time to actually do it.”
Introduced to
Muskoka at Silver Bridge two years ago,
Scott has developed a strong following at
the gallery, with collectors from across the
country drawn to his expressive work.

Scott’s
probing figurative work as well landscapes
celebrate the configurations of cloud and
landscape in the rolling countryside around
Rugby, where the artist lives. Largely
painted alla prima, the works reflect
his sensitive responses to sites and sitters
alike.
Scott
describes his true subject matter as
“responding and feeling as honestly as I can
to the world around me and sometimes the one
in my head.” His aim, he adds, is to express
his relationship to those worlds.
Of his
approach, he says, “I just keep painting. I
have discovered that you can’t plan these
things out as much as I thought you could.
[The works] evolve on their own, totally
linked to how you are feeling and responding
to your experiences as they come…
