Siggy Puchta was born in Germany in 1933,
the son of a woodcarver. As a child he
showed great interest in drawing and
modeling, and was set to follow in his
father’s footsteps; while still a teenager,
he completed three years of study in
carving.
However, in
1952, Puchta fled East Germany for the West,
and two years later immigrated to Canada,
where he first worked on a farm while
continuing to sculpt at night. He soon took
a job as a carver in the furniture
department at Ridpath’s in Toronto, while
employed at the same time as a stone carver
in a monument shop. In 1958, he became a
Canadian citizen.
Puchta
continues to live in Toronto, and spends his
summers in Muskoka. He has been showing his
work in bronze, stone and marble in Canada,
the U.S. and Mexico for over 35 years. His
most recent monumental public commissions
are the Ontario Police Memorial the
Firefighters Memorial at Queen’s Park in
Toronto. |

Along with animals, one of his favourite
subjects, Puchta has also completed many
figurative sculptures and medals. His scale
ranges from pieces that fit in the palm of
one’s hand to monumental lions and
larger-than-life renditions of people and
wildlife, all of which exemplify his
longstanding skill as a sculptor.
Silver Bridge
Gallery is pleased to present Siggy’s
figurative works in bronze, with a
repertoire that includes a selection of
animals, such as bears and deer, and ballet
dancers in various poses.
