Andrea Bird works with mixed media, focusing
right now on encaustic and collage. This
award-winning artist graduated from the
Ontario College of Art and Design in
Toronto, and is a member of the Ontario
Society of Artists. Currently, she lives
rurally near Mount Forest, Ontario. Her work
is about the emotional connection between
spirit and nature, as well as our
relationship with others and ourselves. She
continues to explore this in several
ways. Encaustic is a process that involves
melting beeswax, damar resin and oil paint
to create a luscious, malleable surface.
Each layer is fused with heat (blowtorch,
iron, heat gun) and includes collage
elements - often organic, like rust, earth,
and roots. Recent work includes photocopy
transfers of photographs Andrea has taken in
the forests around her home. She is truly in
love with the process of encaustic painting,
continuously discovering new ways of working
with the medium.
